Workspace Week at Innate Chiro
How we work really does impact our health doesn’t it. We often speak about being asleep (if we sleep 8 hours per night) for 30 years if we live to 90… and the same goes for work. As adults, work takes up a large part of our day, and unsurprisingly, it can really impact how we feel in our bodies.
Whilst at Innate chiro we focus a lot on our sense of self, our feeling of our body and getting back to being aware of where we are in space, and how it makes us physically feel, you would often think that we don’t need to be mindful of this at work.
But hands up if you catch yourself at your desk for over an hour without really getting up? Or standing in the one position doing a repetitive task? Or lifting continuously and then complaining of a sore back?
All of these things are the way you work… and they can impact on your spinal health. It’s important for us to really ensure we are working well.
So What Can You Do?
Dr Kate has some great tips to keep you spinal health functioning well in the workplace:
Get your ergonomics set up correctly. Is your screen at the right height? Is your chair appropriate? If you stand all day, are you on a standing mat?
Any form of repetitive activity can be no good. If you are consistently repeating an activity as part of your day to day, look at how you can break up the action, do it in parts, or take regular breaks.
Video yourself at work… it’s often pretty clear about our postural concerns when we get a photo or a video of ourselves working. One of the main things we do with adjusting is video how we each do an adjustment, and then refine based on this. How could this work in your workplace?
Move your body… do the straighten up Australia exercises to get your spine moving… and if you’re in a posture-strain role - do them 2-3x/day.
We trust that these short sharp tips will help you to avoid the common musculoskeletal concerns of workplace.
